State Senators in New Mexico Take Aim at Coyote “Killing Contests” - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To New Mexico State Senators Mark Moores (R-Albuquerque) and (Jeff Steinborn D-Las Cruces) who plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit individuals and groups from organizing and participating in coyote killing contests.

According to a recent news article, two Senators in New Mexico are working together on a bipartisan bill that would save the lives of many of New Mexico’s coyotes. Coyotes are a native species to New Mexico. As a natural predator, this small canine hunts rodents and reptiles and does not pose a threat to human beings.

Despite this, some ranchers and hunters  are regularly taking part in organized coyote killing competitions, in which prizes are awarded for whoever can bring back the most coyote corpses in a predetermined period of time.

Take action. Residents of New Mexico, contact your legislators and urge them to pass a law to ban killing competitions of coyotes.
