San Francisco May Outlaw Sale of Fur Apparel - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
December 14, 2017

To Katy Tang, member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors proposed a new measure that would prohibit the sale of fur apparel in San Francisco, California.

According to a recent news article, Board of Supervisors member Katy Tang, a champion animal welfare advocate in the city, announced a proposal to outlaw the sale of fur apparel in San Francisco. Second-hand items and fur apparel from vintage stores would be exempt from the ban, provided the furs were not sourced from endangered species. If passed, the legislation would go into affect July 1, 2018.

Crammed into tiny cages stacked on top of each other, fur-bearing animals, such as foxes, raccoon dog, mink, and rabbits in fur farms are unable to move freely. Fur-farmed animals must be killed in a way that will not damage the pelts. Small animals are crammed into air-tight boxes and gassed with deadly fumes. Animals unlucky enough to survive are skinned alive. Animals may also be anally or vaginally electrocuted. Still others are suffocated, poisoned, or beaten to death.

Take action. Residents of San Francisco, California, contact your Board of Supervisors and respectfully urge them to pass the proposal to outlaw the sale of animal fur in the city.

Re: Proposal to Ban Sale of Fur Apparel in San Francisco, CA

Dear Supervisor,

My name is [Your Name] and I am a San Francisco resident urging you to support a ban on the sale of fur apparel in the city. Fur-farming is an inherently cruel business that cannot be justified by need or profit. Animals suffer intensely for the sale of their pelts. Before being killed, they spend months in stacked, cramped cages with little protection against the elements. As a result of unrelenting stress and boredom, many develop behavioral abnormalities including rocking and self mutilation. These animals will likely be killed by electrocution – painfully ending the animals life, while keeping the pelt intact. Please, take action to end the commerce of pelts, and pass a ban on the sale of fur apparel in San Francisco.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
