NY Governor Cuomo Signs S7388B to Better Protect Pets - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
September 22, 2018

To New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for signing S7388B to protect companion animals when families are evicted from their homes.

Companion animals are commonplace in the lives of many Americans today. Laws to better protect their well-being are continually being passed throughout the United States from tethering restrictions or bans to sheltering in extreme weather conditions. These laws are passed to create a more humane world for our animal friends to live in and protect them from man’s negligence.

According to a recent news article, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed S7388B on August 23, 2018, in an effort to prevent animals from being left on the property when tenants are evicted. This bill was introduced to Governor Cuomo by Senator Jim Tedisco (R) after he heard the story of a young dog name Tori. Her owners had been evicted while they were away, and when they returned they could not gain access to the property. After two days, her owners were granted permission by the court to retrieve her. Thankfully she did not sustain any injuries, but the emotional distress that occurred, while she was waiting for her owners to return, could have been prevented. Now when officers are evicting tenants, they are required to search the property for animals. If any animals are found, they will work with the owners to find a way to remove them from the property.

Take Action: New York residents contact Governor Cuomo and thank him for signing this important bill to protect our beloved pets.
