NHES Offering Free Humane Education Programs at Schools Nationwide - National Humane Education Society

In the 1980s – nearly 18 million pets were euthanized in U.S. shelters. Today, that number is 2.7 million. Progress is undoubtedly being made in the effort to protect animals from homelessness, cruelty, and neglect. However, to continue this trend, today’s young people must be included as part of the solution.  sMegan H Los Alamos 2015

For this reason, NHES works year-round to educate youth across the U.S. about responsible citizenship towards pets. At a NHES’ Kindness in the Classroom presentation,  K-6th grade students receive interactive, age-appropriate education about the feelings of animals, the needs of pets, spay/neuter, adoption, and safety with pets.

Because NHES believes humane education should be a part of everyone’s education, Kindness in the Classroom is offered for free to U.S. schools nationwide. “People are surprised to learn our educators will get into a car or airplane and travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to reach a school that has requested a program,” says NHES Humane Education Coordinator, Megan Flinn.

In 2016-2017 school year, NHES hopes to reach more students than ever. “We’re asking teachers, guidance counselors, and principals to contact us as early as possible this school year as the calendar can fill up quickly,” says Flinn. To get more information about Kindness in the Classroom, or to schedule a visit at your school, email education@nhes.org or call Megan Flinn at 304-725-0506 X 205.
