Woodbridge, NJ, Has Passed an Ordinance to Restrict Dog Tethering - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To Mayor John McCormac of Woodbridge, New Jersey, for passing a restricted tethering ordinance.

According to a recent news article, beginning March 1, 2017, dog owners in Woodbridge, New Jersey, will need to abide by a stringent set of guidelines in regard to tethering their dogs outside. Prolonged tethering has adverse physical and psychological effects on canines, particularly when the dog is tethered without adequate food, water, and shelter, and in extreme weather conditions. This ordinance was prompted by  complaints by concerned citizens in Woodbridge who observed a dog tethered for long periods of time in extreme winter weather. The new law states that individuals can only tether their dogs for 2-hour increments. No owner is permitted to tether a dog for longer than 6 hours total within a 24-hour period. Chains are not permitted as a tether, and access to fresh water and food are a must. Additionally, overnight tethering is prohibited.  Anyone found guilty of not abiding by the law will be charged and may face a fine up to $2,000 per incident.
