To U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer for introducing H.R. 5954, also known as the Limiting Inhumane Federal Trapping for Public Safety Act.
Throughout the United States, the vicious jaws of body-gripping traps have left their mark on both wildlife and companion animals. In Franklin County, Pennsylvania, a 1-year-old Bald Eagle was caught in a body-gripping trap. Her injuries prevented her from being released into the wild, and she may face euthanasia if a sanctuary cannot be found for her. In Minnesota, U.S. Representative John Reynolds sadly experienced the devastation of a body-gripping trap when his dog Penni received fatal wounds from a trap after accidentally becoming ensnared. In Canandaigua, New York, a college student was walking with her dog, Molly Rose, when the dog inadvertently got caught in a trap and died. Representative Reynolds now petitions for new regulations concerning the use of body-gripping traps in Minnesota.
U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon), a co-chairmen of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, has introduced H.R. 5954 to ban the use of body-gripping traps by federal personnel of the Department of Interior and the Department of Agriculture. A few exceptions are permitted, as a last resort, with proper documentation and followed procedures. If an employee is found guilty of a violation, he or she may face jail time up to 1 year, or a fine under Title 18 of The United States Code.
