San Francisco, CA, Considering Ban On Plastic Straws - National Humane Education Society

To San Fransisco, CA, Supervisor Katy Tang for proposing an ordinance to ban the sale of plastic straws in the city.

Plastic may be lightweight, cheap, and convenient for restaurateurs, but there is no doubt that our environment is becoming clogged by discarded plastic straws and containers. City Supervisor Katy Tang, known for championing animal welfare and environmental causes has proposed an ordinance to ban the distribution of plastic straws in the city and make plastic beverage lids available only upon request or at self-serve stations. Events taking place on city property for 100 more people would be required to make reusable cups an option for at least 10 percent of event guests.

San Fransisco has a major plastic problem. Plastic straws and other products are littering the beaches, streets, and oceans. Even worse, straws and other products are often swallowed by sea turtles and other marine life with fatal consequences. Reducing the amount of plastics will reduce the overall poundage of plastics that destroy animals and scenery.

Take action. Residents of San Fransisco, CA, contact Mayor Mark Ferrell and the San Fransisco Board of Supervisors and urge them to support a proposal to ban the sale of plastic straws and restrict the distribution of other plastics in your city. Please feel free to use NHES’ sample action letter below.

Re: Please support the initiative to ban plastic straws in San Fransisco.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing you today to encourage you to support Supervisor Tang’s proposal to ban the distribution of straws in San Fransisco. Plastic straws are an unnecessary utensil. They are clogging our city streets, shorelines, and ocean waters. This is creating an eyesore, but also presenting a compounding danger to marine wildlife. It is estimated that more than 500 million single-use plastic straws are used and thrown away every day in the U.S. There is no reason for this, especially considering the alternatives of metal, glass, bamboo, and paper straws — or even no straw at all. Please support an initiative to ban straws in our city.

Appreciatively,

As a person who walks the beach every day in SC, I agree with the ban of plastic straws. I have picked up hundreds of them. I am appalled by the garbage left by people who feel it is someone else’s job to keep the beach clean.

Plastic straws plastic bags are all dangerous to our environment. If humans & restaurants would be less careless & re-cycle properly but humans do not think about the cause & effect of plastic in our environment & wildlife
