Odessa, Texas, Says No to Mandatory Spay & Neuter Law - National Humane Education Society

pawsdownPaws Down!

To Mayor David Turner of Odessa, Texas, for vetoing a mandatory spay and neuter law within city limits.

Animal shelters throughout the United States are constantly faced with the problem of not having enough room.  Many shelters have to deal with overpopulation of companioncats_edited animals through euthanasia.  Sadly, over 11,000 animals are killed each day in the U.S., but this travesty could be avoided using the humane solution of spaying and neutering.

Jacque Adimare, the Animal Control Director in Odessa, Texas, petitioned for a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance within the city limits to help with the overpopulation of animals coming into their facility.  Unfortunately, according to a recent news article, her petition was denied by Mayor David Turner and several other councilmembers stating that “the law would burden responsible owners of intact animals” even though exemptions were made.  Hopefully, in the future, cities and states will adopt mandatory spay and neuter laws like the ordinance that was passed in San Angelo, Texas, on October, 2015.
