Massachusetts Senate Passes Beagle Bill - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
September 11, 2018

To the Massachusetts Senate for passing S.2624 to help protect companion animals from euthanasia in research facilities.

Companion animals in research facilities live bleak lives. They never have the chance to experience a caring touch, run free, or other natural behaviors. They exist in pain-filled, sterile environments until they are no longer needed and terminated. Laws are slowly being passed to help change this sad reality.

According to a recent news article, the Massachusetts Senate has unanimously passed S.2624, also known as The Beagle Bill. This bill will give select research companion animals a second chance at life through adoption. In order for these animals to qualify for adoption, they need to pass a health check and cannot be a risk to public safety. Once adopted, research facilities are not liable for any injuries or damages to property.

Dear {Representative’s Name},

Dogs and cats are an integral part of our everyday lives. They bring us comfort, unconditional love, and companionship. It saddens me to think of all of the cats and dogs in research facilities who are used in the name of science. I am asking for you to support S.2624 that has unanimously passed the Senate. This bill, also known as The Beagle Bill, will give cats and dogs the opportunity to be adopted after research facilities are done with them. Delaware recently passed a similar bill in June of this year. Thank you for your consideration in helping to create a humane ending for these companion animals.

Sincerely,

{Your Name}
