Massachusetts Senate Approves Bill To Explicitly Outlaw Killing of Animal By Drowning - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
March 23, 2018

To the Massachusetts Senate for unanimously passing a bill to outlaw the drowning of animals and other crimes against animals.

According to a recent news article, the Massachusetts State Senate has unanimously passed S. 2332, a bill to ban the drowning of all wild and domestic animals, which is currently not explicitly prohibited in Massachusetts. The bill would also end the automatic euthanasia of all animals impounded from animal fighting. Furthermore, it would prohibit sexual contact with animals and require landlords to search properties for abandoned animals no later than three days after a property is vacated.  Landlords would also be prevented from taking action against tenants for owning a certain breed of dog. Now that S. 2332 has been passed by the Senate, it will go to the House for review.

Take action. Massachusetts residents, contact your representatives and urge them to support S. 2332 to protect animals in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Feel free to use NHES’ sample action letter below.

Re: S. 2332 to Protect Animals From Cruelty

Dear Representative [Last Name]

I am writing to urge you to support S. 2332 which would strengthen Massachusetts’s animal cruelty laws. Among other measures, this bill would ban the drowning of animals, stop the automatic euthanasia of animals seized from fighting operations, explicitly prohibit sexual abuse of animals, and require landlords to search vacated properties for animals within three days of the property being vacated. Landlords would also be prohibited from taking action against tenants for owning a certain breed of dog. This bill takes a common sense approach to preventing and punishing animal cruelty. Please full support S. 2332!

Sincerely,
