Maryland Veterinarians May Soon Be Required to Report Suspected Animal Abuse - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To the Maryland General Assembly for passing House Bill 1463 that would require veterinarians to report possible animal cruelty or neglect.

Animal abuse often occurs in tandem with domestic abuse and other crime. Breaking this cycle of violence is one way to creating a more humane world for animals and people. Maryland legislators are working towards lessening the number of animals subjected to abuse and neglect by passing House Bill 1463. According to a recent news article, this bill would require veterinarians to report possible cases of animal abuse or neglect to law enforcement.  The bill is expected to be presented to Governor Larry Hogan for his review on May 2 or May 4, 2017. If passed into law, H.B. 1463 will take effect October 1, 2017, and Maryland would become the 16th state with this mandatory law to help combat animal cruelty.

Dear Governor Hogan:

My name is {Your Name} and I am a concerned resident writing on behalf of the welfare of companion animals throughout Maryland. As you may know, last month a puppy was discovered abandoned on the side of the road in Howard County, MD.  He was clinging to life when Good Samaritans stopped to help him. To help aid animals in the fight against cruelty, I beseech you to sign House Bill 1463, that would make Maryland the 16th state to mandate that veterinarians report possible animal abuse or neglect.  Thank you for your consideration in helping to create a more humane world.

Respectfully,

{Your Name}
