Paws Up!

To Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards (D) for signing Senate Bill 160 that will protect tethered animals during extreme weather conditions.
Extreme weather conditions pose a threat to many animals who exist on the end of a chain. When these companion animals are not given the chance to find safety they can become badly injured or sadly perish. According to a recent news article, Louisiana lawmakers were waiting for Governor John Bel Edwards (D) approval of Senate Bill 160 to help give these animals a fighting chance during hurricanes or flooding. Governor Edwards signed SB 160 on May 15, 2018. Beginning August 1, owners found guilty of keeping their animals tied up outdoors, may receive a fine up to $75. As minuscule as the fee may be, it is a step in the right direction to creating a more humane life for tethered animals.

How can I go about getting my state – Louisiana – to pass the law or create the law for leaving pets inside of hot vehicles?
Hi Kelly! Thank you for your comment. Start by reaching out to your local representatives and asking them to support legislation that would increase criminal consequences or fines for people who leave their animals unattended in hot vehicles. Also ask your local law enforcement authorities what protocols they already have in place for those situations. That’s a good place to start. Thanks for supporting animals!
Thank you, Governor Edwards, for helping tethered animals. It’s so sad to see that. As an avid animal lover, it’s hard for me to understand how anyone can do that to their pet.
Thank you Sir!!!!!
Thank you so much for helping the animals during times of disasters! We all know the terrible truth of what happened to so many beloved pets during hurricane Katrina, and that should NEVER happen again! They ARE our family!
Thank you, again, hope every Governor follows your example!
I live in CA but I too thank you for your kindness to help animals who are tethered. I wish more people would help animals – – the animals can only do so much for themselves. Thank you again.
Thank you so much for your kind and compassionate action.
Dear Governor Edwards, Thank you so much for your kind and compassionate action.
Wish you were our Governor!
Thank you for helping the animals!
Governor Edwards, Thank you for passing this Bill, as I am from PA. It is a step forward in the right direction, I agree but the fines need to be made harsher for the owners or Guardians as they should be known of these pets. As a Guardian, you are promising to protect this pet in all manners, as a parent would do with a child. And those who show total disregard of protecting, and show neglect need to feel the punishment, and that can be costly when Animal rescues step in and treat the animal which can be hundreds and thousands of dollars. So as a responsible Guardian myself, My Kids come first, and Always protected and seek medical attention as needed for vaccines and wellness visits, which are costly when you care for 7 kids. So I’m sure you’ll receive more “business” coming down the pike on the fine rate, you may want to listen to more Guardians who say to increase the rate. But I applaud you on passing the Bill, and hope that many more states follow in your footsteps, because no Animal or Beast should be left out in any extreme weather. Ask them, ” How would you like to left out in the hot sun or bitter cold winds without food, water or shelter ? ” Think about it and then wait for a response. It may shock you.
Thanks Governor Edwards for passing SB160 and moving animal rights forward!
