Indiana S.B. 314 Would Protect Animals in Domestic Abuse Cases - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To Indiana Senator Veneta Becker (R-Evansville) for proposing a bill that would protect companion animals in domestic violence situations by granting victims custody of their companion animal.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), companion animals reside in over 50% of households in the United States.  The CDC goes on to state that these households benefit greatly emotionally, mentally, and physically by the addition of these companion animals. With these positive health benefits in mind, lets consider the victims of domestic abuse. Their companion animals are their lifeline of support.  How can these victims remove themselves from a dangerous home life when their companions are not guaranteed the ability to come with them?

According to a recent news article, many victims would rather stay in abusive relationships than relinquish their beloved companions to the hands of their abusers.  In response to this sad reality, Indiana Senator Veneta Becker has introduced S.B. 314 that would give victims the courage to leave knowing that they can take their companion animals with them and provide protection for them as well.

Take action: Residents of Indiana, contact your legislators and urge them to support S.B. 314.
