Governor Sununu of NH Rallies To Fight Puppy Mills - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!

To New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who called for stricter animal cruelty laws in New Hamsphire after the seizure of grossly neglected Great Danes from a puppy mill.

According to a recent news article, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has been inspired to take action against animal cruelty after the recent seizure and rescue of about 75 Great Dane puppies from a puppy mill in Wolfeboro, NH. The puppy mill operator, Christina Faye was arrested in June, 2017, on animal cruelty charges after dozens of Great Dane puppies and dogs were found in her large home in extremely unsanitary living conditions. The police investigated when neighbors began submitting complaints of constant dog-barking. Once the officer entered the home, he found floors covered in urine, feces, and maggot-infested dog food. Some of the dogs were suffering from malnutrition, skin infections, and ear mites.

Under current law in New Hampshire, a person breeding and selling puppies is only considered a “commercial breeder” once he or she sells ten litters of puppies or 50 individual puppies in one year. Had the law considered Faye a commercial breeder, state monitoring may have prevented the suffering of these animals. As a result, Governor Sununu has announced he will work to bolster New Hampshire’s Commission on the Humane Treatment of Animals.  Governor Sununu and likeminded legislators have announced plans to introduce legislation that ensure breeder facilities are upholding proper animal care standards.

Take Action:  New Hampshire residents, contact your legislators to express your support of legislation that would regulate commercial dog breeding.

Dear {Legislator’s Name}:

My name is {Your Name} and I am a citizen of New Hampshire and committed to protecting the welfare of animals. As you are well aware, a terrible case involving the inhumane breeding of dozens of Great Danes in New Hampshire has led many, including Governor Sununu, to call for state laws that would prevent similar tragedies from again happening in New Hampshire. I am writing to ask that you join efforts in your state to designate more breeders selling puppies as commercial breeders, and heighten penalties for breeders who harm animals.  Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,
{Your Name}
