To the Cattaraugus County Legislature for passing a law to keep animal abuse registrants from acquiring farm animals.
When one thinks of animal abuse, farm animals are sadly not given much thought, but lawmakers in Cattaraugus County, New York are changing that. They unanimously passed a law to make the abuse of farm animals grounds to be added to the animal abuse registry. This change came after a vast number of animals from a farm in Farmersville, NY, were found to be without adequate food or shelter. According to a recent news article, individuals found guilty of animal abuse will be required to pay a $125 registration fee to be added to the registry. The fee will be increased to $250 for anyone who fails to register. In addition, individuals will stay on the registry for 15 years and will not be allowed to have any animals in their possession. Anyone who sells or gives an animal to these individuals will face a fine of $500-$2,000.
