Athens, Georgia Considers Dog Chaining Ban - National Humane Education Society

Paws Up!
December 14, 2017

To citizens of Athens, Georgia for advocating for limitations on dog chaining!

According a recent news article, some citizens in Athens, Georgia are teaming up to protect dogs from the long-term suffering and risks that come from being on a chain for hours, days, and even months. Chained dogs are exposed to the elements, roaming animals, parasites, and potential for injury. Furthermore, dogs who are chained over long periods of time degrade psychologically. Feelings of boredom, frustration, and fear make them more likely to bite than well-socialized animals. The city council and mayor’s office have received drafts of ordinances passed by other communities. Many of these ordinances will limit the length of time a dog can be tethered outdoors in a 24-hour period. They also usually have provisions for inclement weather and specify standards for available food, water, and shelter.

The city council will discuss a potential ordinance December 18.

Take action. Residents of Athens, Georgia, contact your city council and urge them to pass an ordinance to outlaw continuous dog chaining in your city.

Re: Ordinance To Ban Dog Chaining in Athens, Georgia

Dear Councilmember,

My name is [Your Name] and I am writing to encourage the City Council to pass an ordinance addressing continuous dog chaining in the city. While some dog owners without fences may tether their dogs for short periods of time, continuous dog chaining that goes on for many hours, days, months, or even years is highly risky and unpleasant for the animal. Dogs who are continuously chained can become unsocialized and aggressive. Continuous barking from boredom and stress harm communities and hurt property values. Most of all, the dogs themselves often perish due to constant exposure to the elements, parasites, roaming animals, and their own accumulated waste. Please help protect dogs in Athens, and pass an ordinance to limit dog chaining!

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
