For over a century, thousands of purebred dogs from all over the world have been celebrated alongside their owners and trainers at pedigree competitions like The National Dog Show. This past February, however, a different type of dog was celebrated that is often overlooked: the rescue dog.
The American Rescue Dog Show, now in its third year, puts the spotlight on the best qualities of a dog’s personality besides pedigree alone. Many of the categories for awards include: Best in Snoring, Best in Underbite, Best in Belly Rubs, and even Best in Being a Couch Potato, among others. All of the dogs who participate come from animal rescues or shelters, and include not only purebreds but many are a mixture of two or more breeds of dogs. The grand prize winner is not only awarded the title of “Best in Rescue” but is given a $30,000 donation to the rescue from where they were adopted.
