When you adopt a puppy, be sure to consider the following Do’s and Don’ts of care and training to nurture a healthy, loving relationship!

 

Be prepared and make sure you have adequate time to care for and socialize your puppy.

 

Do:

  • Purchase essentials such as drinking and eating bowls, a leash, a collar, and assorted rubber toys before the arrival of your puppy
  • Make a schedule for the puppy's care and stick to it.
  • Provide your puppy with a complete and balanced diet and plenty of fresh water at all times.
  • Provide your puppy with comfortable sleeping quarters.
  • Give your puppy plenty of love and affection.
  • Make sure your puppy is on a regular vaccination program and occasionally checked for parasites.
  • Provide your puppy with an ID tag and dog license as soon as it becomes of age.
  • Train your puppy properly - to be a good neighbor.
  • Consult a veterinarian on neutering or spaying your puppy when it comes of age and most importantly.... 
  • Have patience with your puppy—accidents will occur occasionally.

Make sure your puppy does not develop bad habits--they can be difficult to change later on!

 

Don't:

  • Let your puppy run loose.
  • Leave your puppy alone or unattended for long lengths of time.
  • Encourage biting, snapping, or jumping on people.
  • Let your puppy eliminate in a neighbor's yard.
  • Let your puppy remain outdoors for long periods, and make sure he is inside during weather extremes.
